Proposed Downgrade of SA Embassy in Israel – the Implications thereof

At the ANC National Policy Conference in July, a proposal was made to downgrade the SA Embassy in Tel.  Minister Edna Molewa, the chairperson of the International Relations Commission at the conference, explained that there would be a consultation process on this matter in the lead up to the ANC’s elective conference in December where the matter would be decided on.  She encouraged the SAJBD’s input in this process.

Representations have been made articulating the negation of the role that  the ANC or the SA Government could play in peacebuilding between the Palestinians and Israelis. Furthermore it will impact on the constitutional rights to religious and cultural freedom by the Jewish and many members of the Christian community.  It will also have effect trade and tourism.
